Basic First Aid and CPR

Red Cross Health Adult, Infant and Child CPRPurpose:  To give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing and cardiac emergencies until advanced medical personnel take over.

This is a First Aid and CPR class providing certification in Adult, Child or Infant CPR, as well as First Aid. Some classes can include all four components, or they can be split into individual component units. A separate course of Bloodborne Pathogens: Preventing Disease Transmission can be added to this class or taught as a stand-alone class. However, students may sign up for any one component offered, if desired.

Prerequisites:  None

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how to recognize and handle an emergency.
  • Explain how to check the scene for safety and the victim for consciousness.
  • Explain when and how to move a victim from a dangerous scene.
  • Describe when to call and how to interact with the emergency medical services (EMS) system.
  • Explain why and how to apply basic precautions to reduce the risk of disease transmission during and after providing care.
  • What Good Samaritan Laws are and how they apply to emergency situations.
  • What consent means and how to obtain consent in an emergency involving an adult, child or infant.
  • Describe how to prioritize care for life-threatening injuries or sudden illnesses.
  • Describe how to check a conscious victim for life - and non-life-threatening conditions.
  • Describe how to recognize the signals of a heart attack and how to give care.
  • Demonstrate how to care for a victim who is having a breathing emergency; and.
  • Demonstrate how to perform CPR to an adult, child and infant.

Certification Requirements:

  • Attend and participate in all course sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills listed on the skills checklist;
  • Participate in all skills sessions and scenarios; and
  • Pass the final written exam with a score of 80 percent or better.

Certificates Issued and Validity Periods:  Adult, Child and Infant CPR - 1 year, First Aid - 3 years, Bloodborne Pathogens - 1 year.
