BASIC DISASTER SERVICES CLASSES

On-Line Courses

Introduction to
Disaster Services
|
|
Self-study
to engage and inspire the public to actively participate in supporting
American Red Cross disaster response. The course will introduce learners to
American Red Cross Disaster Services and allow them to discover how
volunteers support this critical mission and learn about ways they can
become involved in their local chapter. Prerequisites: None.

Fundamentals of
Disaster Assessment I
|
|
Blended
learning course consisting of two components - online and instructor led
(Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment II). Successful completion of both
course components is required. This online component provides an overview
of the Disaster Assessment activity and its related tasks. Prerequisites:
Introduction to Disaster Services and Mass Care Overview.

Fulfilling Our Mission
|
|
This
course is specifically designed to enable you to translate your care and
compassion into community action. Assess how your skills and abilities can
strengthen the capacity of your community and the Red Cross to better serve
people affected by disaster. Explores the Mission of Red Cross, the
principles and values that support the Mission and the expected behaviors of Red
Cross volunteers and employees. Prerequisites: None.

Mass Care Overview
|
|
This
course introduces learners to the activities for the Mass Care group. It
involves video segments, instructor lectures and classroom activities in
support of a disaster relief operation. Prerequisites: Introduction
to Disaster Services.

|
Client Casework
(formerly Family Services)
|
|
This
course is to prepare you to perform the tasks of an Individual Client
Services Client Casework Service Associate on chapter, multi-chapter and
national disaster operations. The focus is on the common systems, processes
and terminology that enable the Red Cross to provide efficient and
effective service delivery to individuals and communities affected by
disaster, using disaster workers who have not worked together previously. Prerequisite:
On-line courses Introduction to Disaster Services and Client
Assistance Cards (CAC)

Disaster Assessment
II
|
|
Basic
level Disaster Services course to introduce the critical role of Disaster
Assessment, explore related preparedness tasks, learn how to collect and
communicate disaster assessment information and become familiar with how
disaster assessment information supports management and service delivery
decisions. Prerequisite: Completion of on-line courses
Introduction to Disaster Services and Disaster Assessment I and homework (bring
to DA II class).

Shelter Operations
|
|
Basic
level course designed for learners to acquire knowledge of Red Cross
policies and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter
during a disaster. The course includes lecture and group exercises to
prepare volunteers to manage shelter operations effectively and sensitively
as a team, while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of
disaster. Prerequisite: Completion of on-line course
Introduction to Disaster and instructor led course Mass Care Overview.

Shelter Simulation
|
|
Designed
for learners to acquire knowledge of Red Cross policies and procedures for
setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster. Hands-on
activities and group exercises. Prerequisite: Completion of
Shelter Operations.

INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED COURSES
|
|
A
variety of intermediate and advanced courses are available to volunteers
who have completed all basic courses. Please contact our office (contact

Adult CPR/First Aid Training for Disaster
Volunteers
|
|
This
course is specifically designed for the active chapter disaster volunteer. Prerequisite:
Active DAT member or currently enrolled and in good standing in
the DSHR System.
|
|
Most
classes are held at the Ouachita Area Chapter Red Cross office. Contact our

registration.

Other Disaster Courses (FEMA/Red Cross)
|
NIMS:
National Incident Management System
All personnel with a direct role in emergency preparedness, incident
management of response should complete NIMS ICS-100 and ICS-700.
ICS-100: the self-study introduction course to the Incident
Command System. It introduces the basic functions of the Incident Command
System and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This
course describes the history, features and principles and organizational
structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship
between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). To obtain

ICS-700: a Web-based awareness
level course that explains NIMS components,
concepts and principles. Although it is designed to be taken online
interactively, course materials may be downloaded and used in a group or
classroom setting. Answer sheets are available from the Emergency
Management Institute's Independent Study Office at 301-447-1256. To obtain
